The Fishing industry is one of Aotearoa’s big exporters. It can be a high risk industry but it can also lead to a lucrative career. The Westport Deep Sea Fishing School is a school that trains students in the vital skills needed to make it in the industry. Join us over the next thirteen weeks as we meet and follow two young lads from Wairoa and their journey into manhood.
These boys along with other fresh faced students will be put through their paces, learning everything they need to know about the deep sea fishing industry.
The students will be taught how to sharpen their knives, and why they need them so sharp. Weighing, packaging and cleaning are all part of life on a factory boat, so they’ll need to be quick at those if they want a job at the end of the course. And if things go wrong out at sea, they need to know how to stay alive.
All this will prepare them for their final test, six weeks work experience out at sea on a deep water vessel to try and land the biggest fish of them all – the job they came here for.
